Alessandro Pedretti: The Rooler Family – A Dialogue Between Form, Light and Vision

In this exclusive interview, we explore the design universe that gave birth to the Rooler family: a lighting collection that defies convention thanks to its ability to be timeless. We talk to the designer at the helm of this project, who tells us about the inspirations, the challenges faced and how to achieve a product designed to evolve endlessly.

How would you describe the Rooler family in 3 words?

"The Rooler is a symbiotic product, minimalist or protagonist of spaces; mimetic or expressive of an identity of its own that enhances every need for lighting “modularity” and visual context."

What was the main inspiration?

"The inspiration was to seek in the synthesis the value of different expressive and technical aptitudes of the product. Then to configure a family that from a few typical elements could evolve in an almost infinite way in terms of options, character, identity and performance."

What challenges did you encounter during the design process?

"The challenges are to work in the double valence of miniaturisation while maintaining very high performance. This also refers to the perception of an object that can "appear or disappear" depending on its configuration. In essence, a high and powerful range of configurations that allows application possibilities in very broad fields of design."

What is your point of view on AI?

"Artificial intelligence can be a formidable tool, but the poetry of innovation will always be up to our minds. Design is not and will not be just an assembly of data, geometries and performance, but the place where the dreams, visions, intuitions and hopes of our minds will increasingly be concentrated."

What do you expect for the future in the field of lighting?

"I hope that we can, through research and experimentation, find more diversifications from the paths already traced that seem to determine the common spirit and trends. Working with light (i.e., also with the immaterial) must not only be aesthetic and performance research; other more emotional and imperceptible factors must give the value of innovation and avant-garde."
